This is the heartwarming story of Olaf, a young boy, who finds an unexpected companion in Essex, a wise old dog. The story is set in a rural neighborhood with elements of friendship, determination, and growth.
Olaf is a particular boy. Even since childhood, he has been living in a different dimension. While everyone is busy with their lives, Olaf is looking for spice in the world, roaming in the wild. His life takes a turn when he meets a large dog named Essex. Their first meeting is rather awkward, but they become a pair quickly.
Through Olaf and Essex’s travels, Olaf experiences the real meanings of loyalty, bravery, and being oneself. Guided by Essex’s gentle presence and memories, Olaf learns too where to go in adversity and which minor things in life is exceptional. Their escapades are marked by wild adventures and contemplative episodes, which consolidate both relationships.
We see a strong bond of love that firstly, develops into friendship and a solid commitment, which eventually proves again that two can overcome even the hardest times. It was through Essex's wisdom that Olaf emotionally grows up as well, learning how to deal with life’s challenges in an appreciative manner.
It also moves quite strongly from the adventure of friendship and the hardships that perhaps friendship cannot only help solve, but teach us too. It underlines the struggle with the goodness of knowing that sometimes people are able to encourage you more than you think possible.
